The Hobbiton movie set tour is one of the most popular day trips in the whole of New Zealand – a country which is famed as the “real Middle Earth” as it provides the stunning backdrops for the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit movies.

Situated just outside of Matamata in the North Island the Hobbiton Movie Set (aka “The Shire”) is one of the best places to relive your favourite moments from the movies.

Explore the many Hobbit holes which scatter the hillside, jump over the famous fence and enjoy a cold beer or cider at the Green Dragon.

You’ll be guided around the Shire and learn heaps of behind the scenes knowledge about the making of the movie and how the set itself was created.

And don’t worry there’s plenty of time to snap some pictures!

Choose a return trip from Matamata or Rotorua depending on your travel plans.

Fancy rolling down a hill in a giant inflatable hamster ball?

How about racing a buddy down there instead?

Or how about bundling a few buddies into the ball with you and hurtling down a track?

And why not chuck some water in there with you for some extra fun?

Well you can do all of the above and more with the crew from Ogo in Rotorua – who originally invented the sport (commonly known and zorbing) back in 1997.

Their awesome track in Rotorua – on New Zealands North Island – offers a few options depending on what you want to do and of course whether your want to stay wet or dry!

Race to the finish line on the 250m downhill straight track or go all out and tackle the sidewinder – 350m of twists and turns which will bounce you all over the place!

And if you’re not sure what to do grab a Combo Pass which combines one straight track and one sidewinder track…the best of both worlds!
